How Realm of Shadow began
The story arc for Realm of Shadow actually was conceived in the 1980's. As I am an avid role-player, the story began with characters created for various gaming sessions that I ran. The idea of putting these different characters together in a single story seemed interesting. So in essences, the characters came first. Jason Shadowgrass was a lovable smuggler, despite his sour demeanor. Catherine "Cat" Foster, the tough cold pirate captain who yearns to settle down and start a simpler life. Shae, the battle harden mercenary hiding a secret from her employer Jason, just to name a few.
At that time I also had an outline of another novel that I wanted to work on where in fantasy characters get stuck in our modern world. After a few outline changes, several actually, a long tale was devised. Realm of Shadow became the first in that tale, a prelude to my original idea. That was the easy part, creating a believable world was the next challenge. After many pages tossed into the trash, the world of Ine'iss was born. A fantasy world where elves and dwarves are now considered second rate citizens gathered up and forced to live in government sanction lands. Dragons have become extinct and humans are considered the right race to rule the lands.
